Schaerer,L.E.

Enumeratio Critica Lichenum Europaeorum. Quos Ex Nova Methodo Digerit... Bern, Staempfli 1850. Mit gest. Portr. u. 10 teilkolor. lith. Taf. XXXVI, 327 S. Lwd. d. Zt. mit Rckn.-Blindpräg. (Minimal berieb.).

Seltene einzige Ausgabe. Naturforschenden Gesellschaft. - Tls. stockfl., Vors. u. Titel gestempelt. - Dabei: Rabenhorst,L. Kryptoe ISTC) in 17 libraries, four of them in America. A variant (also printed by Froschauer) is known in a single copy (H 6099; Guessing, Austria). Together with the the treatises De captivis christianis (H 4984) and De futuris Christianorum triumphis in Turcos et Saracenos (H 15643), the present work is suggested by the GW-manuscript to be written or compiled by WOLFGANG AYTINGER (Aitinger; c. 1460/65 - after 1512), a like-minded contemporary of Savonarola. Probably born in Augsburg, he studied in Cologne, where he became graduated in 1485. Back in Augburg, he called himself a clergyman. Until 1508 he was corrector for several local printers as Froschauer, Öeglin and Nadler. He is best known for his commentary Titulus in libellum sancti Methodii to the Pseudo-Methodius, printed first by Froschauer in 1496 (H 11120). This eschatological treatise was reprinted and widely commented (cf. Marjorie Reeves, The influence of prophecy in the later Middle Ages, (1969), p. 339 f., 352-354). The woodcut - in the manner of the 15th cent. New-Year-broadsides - shows the infant Christ with an oak-twig. The cut is known in two states: the first as here, with the black centre of the middle wedge of the halo, the second (1499) without it. The printer Johann Froschauer (he was not the father of the famous printer Joh. Froschauer in Zurich as sometimes said), was active in Augsburg from c. 1493 to c. 1520. The number of his vernacular prints is rather small, he mostly produced theological, moral and canonical books (cf. Geldner, Die deutschen Inkunabeldrucker I, 158). Title with small repair, removed label (?) and a single wormhole. Binding somewhat weak. In general a very fine copy. - Titelbl. mit kl. rep. Randausriss, Bindung etwas gelockert. Ex. auf starkem Papier.
