93-3088 Lagerlöf, Selma
(1858-1940). E.Br. (franz.) m.U. 1 1/2 S. 18 x 14 cm. 6. Mai 1938.
Letter signed by author of 'Nils Holgersson' referring to Astrid of Sweden's 1935 visit to the Belgian mining regions - Selma Lagerlöf - [Autograph letter, signed, to Rosette Dubuisson]. Falun, 6 May 1938. [2], [2 blank] pp. - 18 x 14 cm. Together with the original envelope and a photographic portrait made by Küller (Malmö) with manuscript dedication by Lagerlöf at top. - Very well preserved letter by Selma Ottilia Lovisa Lagerlöf (1858 - Mårbacka - 1940), the first female writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (1909) and the first woman to be elected to the Swedish Academy (1914). In this dictated letter she thanks the Belgian counsellor Rosette Duboisson for her epistle and talks about the beautiful gift of Astrid of Sweden, Queen consort of the Belgians (1905-1935) to the Belgian miners. When Astrid visited the mining regions devastated by the 1935 crisis, she talked to the workers to find out how she could help them. She instigated the transport of food supplies and other resources sent out from Laken to the miners. To Lagerlöf this grand gesture by the lady she once described as ''a child as pure and innocent as white snow'' always remained ''a true poetical revelation''.
